By The Carpenter

Woodworking is an exciting hobby. Whatever you want to produce, wood can help you achieve it. Woodworking can be very challenging, and there is always something new to learn. After enough practice and guidance, soon you will see yourself creating many enjoyable projects.

Safety must be a priority when doing woodworking. Proper tool use and safety equipment are important when you are woodworking. Do not take guards off of power machines, because they are meant to protect you. The last thing you want is to injure yourself severely while woodworking.

TIP! When doing any woodworking project, safety is a big concern. Always ensure that safety comes first, and you know how to properly use all the tools.

When you are working with wood, safety must be the number one priority. Always use your tools in the way they were intended to be used and wear safety equipment at all times. Never take the guards off the power tools that you use. The guards are there to keep you safe. You don’t want to begin a project and get seriously injured.

Tain Conditioner

Stir finishes or stains before using them. Some of the ingredients in these stains and finishes tend to settle to the bottom over time. Shaking the product is likely to lead to a frothy mix that still isn’t properly mixed. Be sure to continue stirring until everything that has settled is blended in evenly.

TIP! When you apply wood finishes and stains, make sure you stir, not shake them. Stir often because these stains settle over time.

It is always a good idea to have a pre-stain conditioner for the wood you’re planning to stain. A pre-stain conditioner helps keep away any irregularities or blotches in the wood. These conditioners help the stain penetrate evenly and keep the wood smooth.

Make your own reusable sanding blocks. Cut six blocks from any 3/4″ plywood you have, for each sandpaper grit you regularly use. They should be able two and a half inches by four and three-quarters inches. Spray your adhesive on the cork tile and the block of wood. Stick a block to the cork, making sure to cut the cork flush with a utility knife. Spray the back of a sheet of sandpaper with adhesive and adhere the cork side of the block to it. Now cut the sandpaper flush with the cork, and label each block.

Gel stains make staining furniture items easier. Liquid stains tend to run when they are applied, while gel stains stick to the lumber better. Also, because your gel stains are a lot thicker their pigment is going to be consistent while applying it so that the stain is more even on vertical and horizontal pieces.

TIP! Gel stains are great for furniture. Gel stains can stick to lumber well, while liquid ones can run.

Select the proper wood for any project you do. Some wood is stronger than others, while other woods need to be soft for what it is you’re doing. If you don’t know how each wood type reacts to what you’re trying to do, spend a bit of time learning about it.

It’s crucial that you never try to use fingers or hands as a guide when cutting wood. Rather, make use of a longer, thinner piece of wood that can push it along the saw’s surface. This will assure you keep your fingers.

Avoid using your fingers as guides while cutting narrow pieces of wood. It is a better idea to use a long, narrow piece of wood as a tool to guide it through the blade. This helps you keep every finger, which are required for doing future woodworking.

TIP! Do not use your fingers to guide a narrow strip of wood into the saw. Use a thin piece of wood instead.

Buy nails in the right size and of the right material for each job. If you use a nail whose diameter is too great, it can split the wood, which causes it not have a proper hold. A small nail, however, won’t be able to join the wood together. The right size nails are crucial for having a successful project.

Recycled wood is often cheap and good for the environment. Scraps can be discarded which are a boon for your projects. Some places include big box stores, other woodworkers and floor shops. Make the most of this fact and check for discarded wood that you could actually use. This can produce real savings.

Do you currently have a screw that needs some tightening but is not easy to reach? Head to your toolbox. Grab a 12-point socket and your long-handle screwdriver. Just put your screwdriver into the socket and use your ratchet to get the job done.

TIP! Do you want to tighten a screw but don’t have space to fit the screwdriver and your hand? This is where your toolbox comes in handy. Get a screwdriver with a long handle and a socket that is 12 point.

Drinking some beer while woodworking may seem like fun. However, saws and beer together is never a combination that shows good results. Never drink alcohol while working on a project. The same goes with using prescription or illegal drugs.

Choose the type of wood that is right for the project you are planning. Don’t use soft wood like pine as a table top, because it scratches very easily. And keep in mind that different woods will have different colors at the end of it all.

You can make cuts without a tape measure. You are sure to find how useful story sticks are. You can always also just work into a cut gradually. You can practice your cuts on scrap wood to perfect your technique. Having variety in the ways you can cut will stave off boredom.

TIP! Avoid becoming too perfect with only using tape measures. Story sticks are useful, and you can always gradually work your way up to a cut.

Always be on the lookout for furniture that people are throwing away. You can often find wood furniture available quite inexpensively, if not free. Always review your options before deciding. Even if a chest is too damaged to be repaired, the drawers may be used to create an artistic bookshelf if they are creatively arranged.

Now that you have read through the above suggestions, put them to use to help you improve your woodworking skills. Woodworking is something that you can always learn more about. Woodworking takes dedication and patience, so don’t be discouraged.

It may seem fun to have a beer or two while working in the shop. However, you never want to mix drinking with machinery such as saws. Don’t work on anything if you are drinking. This is also true for prescription medications or illicit drugs.
