Great Advice For Having Fun With Woodworking

By The Carpenter

This is the place to learn about woodworking. In the following paragraphs, you’ll find a variety of tips that can help regardless of what your skill level may be. When you continue reading, you’ll learn a ton of new tips.

TIP! Before you stain your wood project, apply a pre-stain conditioner onto the wood. If you use a pre-stain conditioner, you will be less likely to notice any blotches or irregularities in your finished project.

Understand that safety should be your top concern with woodworking. Use the right safety gear and operate tools according to their manual. Don’t take the guards off the tools you have as they were put there for your protection. You don’t want to start in your workshop and end in a hospital bed.

Test your stains on scraps of wood or inconspicuous areas of the piece you’re using. This can help you avoid surprises in case your stain color is different after you’ve applied it. Keep in mind that it is not easy to guess how wood stain will turn out; therefore, you should always test out the stain on a piece of wood to prevent disappointment.

TIP! Never shake a finish or a stain. Only stir them.

Are you aware that your workbench height is critical to your work quality? It should hit at your midline. Your bench will be at the perfect height at this measurement.

Choose the correct wood for your project. Some woods will not do well as they cannot handle the stress that others will. Learn as much as you can about the different varieties of wood before beginning any woodworking project.

TIP! When cutting a narrow wooden piece, do not use fingers like guides! It is a better idea to use a long, narrow piece of wood as a tool to guide it through the blade. This will prevent you from inadvertently whacking off your fingers.

Make sure to purchase and wear proper ear protection. Machinery can be very loud. Continued exposure to the noise can cause some hearing loss. Get some cheap ear plugs or high-quality headphones that block out noise. Whatever you go with, be sure you’re wearing them when using the loud machinery.

Keep an eye out for free wood. A lot of businesses will have wooden pallets they’re trying to get rid of, and you may be able to pick them up. Before you tear the pallets apart, you may want to look online at all the furniture and other building ideas using recycled pallets.

TIP! Learn more about different kinds of wood and their characteristics. Each wood piece is different.

Never stick with tape measures alone. Story sticks are useful, and you can always gradually work your way up to a cut. Just cut scrap wood so you can dry fit the piece. Having variety in the ways you can cut will stave off boredom.

Do not forget the important of keeping in touch with the world. Your woodworking area is probably your private space and lacks Internet access. You’re still going to get stuck or stumped on different projects. Speak with other people in woodworking that can offer helpful solutions to things that confuse you. It’s likely there are others with your question too.

TIP! Always check blade conditions before you saw. Dull blades can make work difficult.

As was mentioned earlier, the tips learned here will assist a woodworker of any level. Apply this knowledge to your next project. The next step is to start a project today!
